5 Simple Ways to Build Balance and Prevent Falls at Home

Balance work does not need a gym. These five simple habits, drawn from the RE·BALANCE pillar of the RE Method™, can be practised safely at home — no equipment required.

Falls are one of the biggest threats to independence as we age — but balance, like strength, is trainable at any age. In the RE Method™, RE·BALANCE work focuses on the kind of stability that matters in real life: getting up from a low chair, stepping off a curb, turning around safely in a small space. Here are five habits our coaches recommend, all safe to try at home.

1

Practise the “chair stand”

Sit in a sturdy chair, then stand up without using your hands, and sit back down slowly. Repeat 5–10 times. This single move builds the leg strength most falls-prevention exercises are actually training towards.

2

Stand on one leg, near support

Hold the back of a chair or kitchen counter and lift one foot slightly off the floor for 10–20 seconds. Switch sides. Do this daily while brushing your teeth — it takes no extra time.

3

Walk heel-to-toe

Take slow steps placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other, as if walking a line. A few metres in a hallway is enough to challenge coordination safely.

4

Clear the floor of hazards

Loose rugs, trailing cords and clutter cause more falls than most people realise. A five-minute walk-through of your home, done once a month, is genuine fall-prevention.

5

Keep moving, consistently

Balance is a use-it-or-lose-it skill. A short daily habit — even five minutes — does more for stability over time than an occasional long session.

A note on safety: if you feel unsteady, always practise near a wall or sturdy furniture, and stop any exercise that causes pain or dizziness. These are general habits, not a substitute for a personalised assessment — which is exactly what the first session of the SilverFit RE Programme™ is for.
